It could have been something she said during her interview with Thevet because she wished it had been so – because she felt ashamed of herself or because it was how it had to be. Maybe they hadn’t even spoken about it, but rather it was an assumption as natural as any other. And what did the word love even mean in André Thevet’s book? Had this sturdy, nameless nobleman seen her at a distance in one of the castles, considered her as a possible object of courtship – or had they met, seen each other, touched each other?

I write that she grows accustomed to the sea. The bodies of water ebbing and flowing. Their might as they raise the boat, sending her upward, forward and releasing, sometimes making her catch air and drop back down. The line between the ocean and sky is present whichever way she looks: the disorientation when it’s no longer there, when all around her are the dark walls of a storm or the milky, misting fog.

On one side of my notebook it says: Does she get used to the men, too? I was thinking about all the men on board, but him as well. At first it might have frightened her to be with all those men. Does this mean I’m turning her into an innocent little girl, or is it a function of remembering what it was like to be so possessed for the first time?

I remember one of my first editors, the comments he pencilled into the margins of a printout of the first chapter of the first draft of one of my earlier novels: Rephrase questions as statements. Avoid asking too many questions.
